When an oversized trench earns its volume

The case for checking proportion before buying Sézane's Clyde Coat, rather than assuming a relaxed fit will do the work for you.

First look

At the doorway

A long trench looks effortless when the shoulders are relaxed in the right way. The question is not simply whether it is oversized, but whether the shoulder seam still lets the body look intentional beneath it.

Try it with

With the clothes that already exist

I would try a volume-heavy coat with the narrowest trouser I own and then with a wide-leg pair. One combination should create a clean column; the other should show whether the coat needs more structure below it.

Live with it

At the end of a wet day

Water resistance is useful, but a coat earns a place by being easy to reach for. Consider the length on stairs, the sleeve over knitwear, the closure in wind, and the dry-clean requirement before letting color decide the purchase.

The best oversized coat still has a point of view about the body inside it.
